Trial opens for RDF soldiers accused of rape, assault of civilians

The military court in Kanombe started Monday the trial of five soldiers of the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) accused of committing crimes against civilians in Kagondo, Remera in Gasabo district.

The five soldiers at the rank of private, and one civilian are accused of assault, rape, and creating a criminal gang. They deny the charges.

The suspects were arrested in April following media reports people in military uniform, while on law enforcement duty had raped some women and beat up other residents.

The reports said the suspects had removed nametags on their uniforms to conceal their identity.

The hearing on Monday centered on bail application for the accused and court set Wednesday May 13 to pronounce its decision.
