Sporting competitions in Rwanda for 2020-2021 season will resume in October behind closed doors, since March after the COVID-19 shutdown, a calendar released Thursday by the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) showed.
The calendar covers competitions for 2019-2020 season which were postponed following the outbreak of the virus in the east African country.
According to the calendar, the second division men’s league play-offs will be played in a single knock-out format, at a yet to be named venue in Kigali from Oct. 2-17, 2020.
The first and second division women leagues will also be played between Oct.3 to Dec. 20, 2020.
Meanwhile, the Rwanda Premier League season 2020-2021 is tentatively planned to kick-off on Oct.30, 2020 and climax on May 20, 2021.
The second division men’s league season 2020-2021 will also tentatively kick-off on Oct.31, 2020 and climax on May 29, 2021.
The 2021 edition of the Heroes Cup Tournament will be played from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1, 2021 while 2021 edition of the Peace Cup Competition is scheduled to kick-off in the weekend of Feb. 4-5, 2020 and climax on June 5, 2021.
In other games, the 2021 edition of the women’s first division league is planned to kick-off on Feb.19, 2021 and climax on July 31, 2021 while the women’s second division league will kick-off on Feb. 20, 2021 and climax on July 24, 2021, respectively.
The calendar is tentative subject to the guidelines of the health ministry, the secretary general of FERWAFA, Regis Uwayezu told a news briefing in the Rwandan capital city Kigali.
He said in case of re-launch the games will be played while respecting measures put in place to fight COVID-19 pandemic.
FERWAFA also set different days for player registration for the different sporting categories.
On June 8, several non-contact outdoor sporting activities resumed in Rwanda, under strict rules to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
