The number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases across the African continent surpassed 162,673 on Thursday, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The cases rose from 158,318 on Wednesday.
The total death toll from the pandemic also rose from 4,508 on Wednesday to 4,601 as of Thursday.
The virus has so far spread into 54 African countries.
Some 70,475 people who had been infected with COVID-19 have recovered across the continent so far.
The most affected African countries by the virus in terms of cases include South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana, as well as Morocco. The Northern African region is the most affected area across the continent both in terms of positive COVID-19 cases, as well as the number of deaths.
The Southern Africa region is the second most COVID-19 affected area, followed by the Western Africa region, according to the figures.
