Africa registers more than 6000 COVID-19 cases, death toll 221

Africa has registered 6,213 cases of coronavirus with a death toll of 221, according to Thursday’s updates by the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The cases were spread across 49 African countries.

The figures showed that most hit countries include South Africa with 1,380 confirmed cases, Algeria with 716 confirmed cases and Egypt with 779 confirmed cases.

It also showed that some 469 people who had been infected with the COVID-19 had recovered across the continent as of the stated period.

According to the updates, more than 427 new confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported across the continent since the center’s recent report on Wednesday.

The death toll meanwhile increased from 196 to 221 as of the stated period.

The African Union activated its Emergency Operations Center and its Incident Management System for the COVID-19 outbreak on Jan. 27.
